Federal Benefits

Documents that should be kept in a safe place:

  • Original separation document or DD-214 (can be recorded at County Clerk's Office)
  • Marriage license
  • ​Divorce decree/death records of prior marriage(s) for self or current spouse.
  • Birth certificates of children or adoption decrees.
  • Social Security numbers for yourself, spouse, and children.

If you cannot locate a copy of your military discharge paperwork, it is important that you take the steps necessary to do so now, BEFORE you are required to furnish a copy. If you currently have an ORIGINAL copy of your military discharge paperwork, it is recommended that you take it to the County Clerk for recording.  Once this is done, you will be able to obtain a certified copy to prove your veteran status.

Operation Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom Veterans

VA provides five years of free health care for veterans who served in certain combat locations during active military experience, beginning on the date of separation from active duty. This benefit covers all illnesses and injuries except those clearly unrelated to active military service. https://www.oefoif.va.gov/

 

America the Beautiful - National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Permanent Disability Access Pass:

  • Cost: Free (if obtained in person at a federal recreation site), lifetime pass, plus a $10 processing fee (if done through mail).

  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States that have been medically determined to have a permanent disability (does not have to be a 100% disability). Applicants must provide documentation of residency or citizenship and documentation of permanent disability 

  • General Information:

    • May be obtained in person at a federal recreation site or through the mail using the application form attached below.

    • Provides entrance or access to pass owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at Federal operated recreation sites across the country.

    • Photo identification may be required to verify ownership.

    • Passes are NON-REFUNDABLE, NON-TRANSFERABLE, and cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.

    • At many sites the Access Pass provides the pass owner a discount on Expanded Amenity Fees (such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and guided tours).

    • Generally does NOT cover or reduce special recreation permit fees or fees charged by concessioners.
