Potential volunteers must complete and return the attached Volunteer Application. After reviewing the application and checking references, the Director may interview the potential volunteer. If the volunteer passes the interview, then the last step in the process is passing a Criminal History Check. For questions contact the Victim Assistance Director at 541-475-4463. Jefferson County Victim Assistance Volunteer Position Description

Position Title: Emergency Victim Assistant Response Volunteer
Purpose: To provide after-hours emergency crisis response to adult and juvenile victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crime related emergency situations.
Qualifications:

  • Desire to help others in need.
  • Ability to be supportive without being directive.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in highly emotional situations.
  • Ability to be non-judgmental.
  • Commitment to speak out when needed on behalf of the victim.
  • Ability to keep all information confidential.
  • Valid Oregon Drivers License and transportation available when needed.
  • Must be available via telephone when needed.

Responsibilities:

  • To be available and on-call on a rotating basis as determined by the on-call calendar from 5:00 pm until 8:00 am the following day Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day on weekends and federal holidays.
  • To respond either by phone or in person, depending on circumstances, when called by Dispatch.
  • To provide the following services to victims:
    • Crisis intervention by listening, providing support and advocacy.
    • Hospital accompaniment for Sexual Assault Forensic Exams and medical exams.
    • Provide safety and action planning such as assisting with finding emergency shelter or transportation to a safe location, giving a 911 cell phone, food, clothing, or addressing other safety considerations.
    • Provide information on crime victims' rights, the criminal justice process, Crime Victims’ Compensation, No Contact Orders, and Victim Assistance Program services.
    • Emergency services by providing emergency financial assistance as needed.
    • Provide civil legal assistance with orders of protection.
    • Provide resource referral to Saving Grace, Warm Springs Victims of Crime Services, DHS-Adult and Family Services for the Domestic Violence grant, VINE, and other applicable agencies.
  • Record the services provided and submit the information to the Victim Assistance Director the next business day following each emergency response.
  • To keep track of all volunteer hours, including emergency crisis response times, volunteer meetings, events, and trainings on a volunteer time sheet and turn in the time sheet to the Victim Assistance Director monthly.
  • To complete Emergency Victim Assistant Volunteer Training prior to providing emergency response services and OVC VAT Online Training within the first year of volunteering. (40+ training hours together)
  • To participate in training opportunities provided by the Victim Assistance Program or their community partners.
