Victim Assistance Program

The Victim Assistance Program is part of the District Attorney’s Office. The mission of the Victim Assistance Program is to inform, serve, and empower victims so that they may exercise their crime victims’ rights, restore their safety and stability, and gain meaningful access to the criminal justice system. The Victim Assistance Program informs victims of their rights and assists victims in asserting their rights throughout the criminal justice process.

The following services are provided:

  • Inform the victim of their rights as a crime victim and advocate for their crime Victim Rights with others.
  • Provide information about the status of the criminal case.
  • Explain and prepare the victim for court hearings, and attend court hearings with the victim, if requested.
  • Assist the victim with the Crime Victims’ Compensation Program application.
  • Assist the victim in documenting crime related financial losses for Restitution.
  • Liaison between the victim and the Deputy District Attorney or Law Enforcement Agency, if requested.
  • Assist the victim with completion of Orders of Protection for their safety.
  • Make referrals to social service agencies and community Resources for the victim’s needs.

A crime victim is defined in the Oregon Constitution as, “any person determined by the prosecuting attorney or the court to have suffered direct financial, psychological or physical harm as a result of a crime and, in the case of a victim who is a minor, the legal guardian of the minor. In no event is it intended that the criminal defendant be considered the victim.” If you are a crime victim, please contact Victim Assistance for information about your case and complete the Victim’s Packet within 14 days of your case starting.
