Jefferson County Jail

Jefferson County Adult Correctional Facility

The Jefferson County Adult Correctional Facility is located along with the Sheriff’s Office at 675 NW Cherry Lane in Madras, OR. The facility was built in 2000 and was open for the holding of inmates in November of 2001. The building is safe, clean, and has a capacity over 6 times that of the previous jail.

Inmate population has grown steadily since the facility opened. Twenty-five inmates were moved from the facility at the courthouse building to the new facility on Cherry Lane in 2001. Our average daily population is about 70. On average, 130 persons are booked into the jail each month by local law enforcement officers.

The Jefferson County Jail employs 12 Corrections Deputies, 2 Court Security Deputies, 4 Corporals, 1 Sergeant, 1 Jail Commander, and 2 Nurses. There are normally 3-4 Corrections Deputies on-duty at a time in the jail 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Our facility has 150 beds available for use. We have not been full yet. This means those who are arrested for crimes committed in our community must either post bail or remain in jail until they go to court.

Inmates are provided the opportunity to attend programs such as church services, AA/NA group meetings, Mental Health classes, Breaking Barriers, and GED courses. We are always looking to provide tools to inmates they can use upon release to better their lives and keep from coming back to jail. Volunteers are an important part of these programs and we are always taking applications for those who may want to help in these endeavors.

Inmates are offered the opportunity to go to our recreation yards and exercise or get books to read daily. There are televisions in the cells blocks for those in general population, however the inmates do not have cable and get only 4 or 5 channels from which to choose from via antenna.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is very proud of our jail facility. Respect is of the utmost importance. We are respectful to the inmates and we are respected in return by the inmates. The inmates are given the opportunity to express any concerns they may have and are encouraged to talk to the staff if they are having any problems. We are not able to deal with all of these issues, but anything we can preempt is in everyone’s best interest.
